(1854-1923) US author who began selling short stories in 1879 and is generally thought of as primarily a writer of Horror, though some of the tales assembled in The Ape, the Idiot & Other People (coll 1897) are sf. His first venture into outright sf was "The Surgeon's Experiment" (15 October 1887 The Argonaut; vt "The Monster-Maker" in The Ape, the Idiot & Other People coll 1897), in which a Mad Scientist doctor decapitates a patient (who had begged him to assist in his Suicide) but keeps the body alive, though gorilla-like (see Devolution). Lentala of the South Seas: The Romantic Tale of a Lost Colony (1908) is a Lost Race tale set on a South Seas Island, where evidences of a white race is discovered. The Monstermaker and Other Stories (coll 2000) assembles all of Morrow's supernatural and sf work. [JC]
