(1870-1949) UK author and controversialist on political matters whose The Master Beast: Being a True Account of the Ruthless Tyranny Inflicted on the British People by Socialism, A.D. 1888-2020 (1907; vt The Red Fury: Britain Under Bolshevism 1919) lives fully up to its subtitle, telling of a young socialist at the turn of the twentieth century who first experiences a German Invasion of a Britain whose socialist government has left it unprepared on Battle of Dorking lines; the tale then segues into a full Scientific Romance as its protagonist, after awakening (see Sleeper Awakes) from Suspended Animation in 2020, experiences the Dystopian enormity of a century of socialist rule, with women freed for immorality (see Sex; Women in SF), George Bernard Shaw canonized, and thought-control universal. Just as hordes of coloured foreigners (see Race in SF) take over the land, the protagonist escapes to France.
The Ealing Miracle: A Realistic Story (1911) is a fantasy in which two women exchange personalities (see Identity Exchange) at the behest of a Christlike stranger and learn about love and deprivation. [JC]
