Riggs, Ransom

(1979-    ) US author whose Young Adult Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children sequence, beginning with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2011) [for further details see Checklist below], smoothly juxtaposes fantasy and Alternate World topoi in a long narrative depicting the trials and tribulations of young Jacob Portman, his disrupted family, Miss Peregrine across the Atlantic who claims to occupy a Time Loop, and various friends who seem to possess something like Superpowers. Echoes of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events sequence are clear, though Riggs's sophisticated and evocative use of found photographs to illuminate his text more than adequately distinguishes this work from his predecessor's.

Talking Pictures: Images and Messages Rescued from the Past (graph 2012) is a nonfiction assemblage of similar material. [JC]
