Saknussemm, Kris

(1961-    ) US-born author, in Australia and elsewhere from early manhood; the mysterious protagonist of his first novel, Zanesville: A Novel (2005), begins a Fantastic Voyage through a Near Future America, starting from New York; the book, which contains sf elements embedded into the text after the manner of the early Rudy Rucker, has been described as Magic Realist, though perhaps it might better be thought of as a gonzo exercise in Equipoise, featuring a ruthless mixture of genres and modes of presentation, including cartoonish evocations of the Graphic Novel. The protagonist's cross-country quest for the secret of his Identity and seeming Psi Powers, while a malignant corporation pursues him in turn, give room for broad Satire. Private Midnight (2009) is an exercise in the supernatural noir. As its title hints, Enigmatic Pilot: A Tall Tale Too True (2011) utilizes elements the Tall Tale [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] in a Steampunk narrative set in pre-Civil War America, with Inventions and Robots galore.
