Sanford, Jason

(?   -    ) US editor, author and blog commentator on the sf scene who began to publish work of genre interest with "Rumpelstiltskin: Private Eye" in Newfangled Fairy Tales: Book 2 (anth 1998) edited by Bruce Lansky; much of his shorter output is fantasy, though at least one volume, Heaven's Touch and Other Science Fiction Stories (coll 2019), is sf. The Plagues sequence beginning with Plague Birds (short version May-June 2010 Interzone; 2021) is set in a desolate distant Near Future whose human population, universally modified through Genetic Engineering, is monitored by the eponymous human/AI hybrids, who govern the world savagely against terrors which at points seem supernatural. The strangeness of this world is compellingly presented. Also set in the same world is the standalone novella "The Ever-Dreaming Verdict of Plagues" (September-October 2011 Interzone). [JC]
