Schätzing, Frank

(1957-    ) German author initially best known for Der Schwarm (2004; trans Sally-Ann Spencer as The Swarm 2007), a vivid expression of Horror in SF: beginning off Peru, ocean currents begin actively to assault and drown humans, governed by a vast Hive Mind dwelling Under the Sea (see Gaia) whose motive is to destroy Homo sapiens before it is too late for the Ecologically-devastated planet. The American military fights back. Limit (2009; trans Jamie Lea Searle, Shaun Whiteside and Samuel Willcocks 2013), which is set in a complexly delineated Near Future, focuses on the commercial and technological implications of a Space Elevator whose immensely enriched corporate owners wish to expand their enterprise on the Moon; but violence threatens.
