Space Stories

US Pulp magazine. Five bimonthly issues October 1952 to June 1953, published by Standard Magazines as a companion to Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories; edited by Samuel Mines. Its policy, like that of Startling Stories, was to feature a complete novel in every issue. To some degree, as Startling's contents steadily matured under Mines's editorship, Space Stories came to fill the gap for readers who preferred the older style of fiction. Thus most of the material comprised rather macho adventures typical of the post-war period, though a few rose above the formulaic. The most notable novel was The Big Jump (February 1953; 1955) by Leigh Brackett but also of interest is "Planet of the Damned" (December 1952; cut vt Slaves of the Klau 1958) by Jack Vance. [BS/MA]
