(1895-1965) Indian-born author, educated in the UK and in active service during World War One, living much of his adult life in Kenya and South Africa; he wrote some mysteries and Westerns as by Norgrove Thurley. Of his fiction, much of which was set in Africa and featured animals both native and imported; his extremely numerous stories for the London Evening News between 1933 and 1964 usually focused on animals in the wild. The young protagonist of the Kaspa sequence – comprising The Lion's Way: A Tale of Men and Lions (1929; vt King of the Jungle 1932), filmed as King of the Jungle (1933); and Kaspa the Lion Man (1933) – is brought up in the African wilds by a lioness, discovers after being captured that he is the heir to a large fortune but scorns the effeteness of civilized life and returns to his home, after enthralling a white woman; the derivation from Tarzan is clear.
