Strahan, Jonathan

(1964-    ) Irish-born anthologist, reviewer, broadcaster and editor, in Australia from 1968. He first became known to the sf field in 1990 as co-founder of the Australian sf journal Eidolon, with which he was involved until 1999 as co-editor and publisher. His long association with Locus as editor and contributor began in 1997, though he returned to Australia in 1999; he was most active as a reviewer for the journal 1999-2004. In 1999 he founded The Coode Street Press, which did not thrive, though he has from early 2010 been conducting under its name the Coode Street Podcasts with Gary K Wolfe, a sequence of live discussions and Interviews podcast on an irregular (but in fact almost always weekly) basis; there are now nearly 600 of these archived at his website [see under links below]. The Coode Street Podcast received a 2021 Hugo in the best fancast category.

Most of Strahan's reprint anthologies are Best-of-Year compilations, beginning with The Year's Best Australian Science Fiction and Fantasy, Volume 1 (anth 1997) with Jeremy G Byrne (1964-2021); the most successful of them, the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy sequence beginning with The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year: Volume One (anth 2007), ending with the thirteenth instalment in 2019. Of his Original Anthologies, the Eclipse sequence beginning with Eclipse One: New Science Fiction and Fantasy (anth 2007), and the Infinity Project sequence of Original Anthologies beginning with Engineering Infinity (anth 2010), have provided forums for a wide range of significant new work. The similarly sharply-focused Drowned Worlds: Tales from the Anthropocene and Beyond (anth 2016), all tales again newly published, provides a gamut of descriptions of – and sometimes recompenses for – the rising of the Earth's seas (see Climate Change). The Book of Dragons (anth 2020) won a Locus Award as best anthology.

Strahan has rapidly become one of the most influential anthologists of the twenty-first century. [JC]
