Wellman, Wade

(1937-2018) US author, son of Manly Wade Wellman, who began to publish work of genre interest with the two poems " A Ballad of Despair" and "On the Staircase" in Fire and Sleet and Candlelight (anth 1961) edited by August Derleth. He collaborated with his father on the short stories – beginning with "The Adventure of the Martian Client" (December 1969 F&SF) – assembled as Sherlock Holmes's War of the Worlds (coll of linked stories 1975; vt The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The War of the Worlds 2009). This sequence intricately involves the detective Sherlock Holmes in the Invasion from Mars featured in H G Wells's The War of the Worlds (1898). Also featured is Arthur Conan Doyle's other series character Professor Challenger: "George E. Challenger Versus Mars" first appeared in the above-cited collection. [DRL]
