Wilde, Fran

(1972-    ) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Everlasting" in Daily Science Fiction for September 2011. Her shorter works are often sf, though sometimes Equipoisally, like "How to Walk Through Historic Graveyards in the Post-Digital Age" (April 2015 Asimov's), where a high-tech Perception monitor "embeds" user in particular takes on reality, the protagonist of the tale seeing dying colleagues as ghosts, who may be real. The Bone Universe sequence beginning with Updraft (2015) is Urban Fantasy [see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy under links below] featuring a floating City grown from living bones; the experience of dwelling within an upsidedown world is vividly conveyed. The Jewel and Her Lapidary (2016 chap) is set in a universe where Psi Powers can be amplified, perhaps by Magic, through the use of certain gems. Updraft won both the Compton Crook/Stephen Tall Memorial Award for best debut novel, and the Andre Norton Award or young-adult Nebula; Riverland (2019) also won the latter award. [JC]
