Winger, F S

(1865-1936) US author, father of Clare Winger Harris; his sf novel, The Wizard of the Island; Or, the Vindication of Prof Waldinger (1917), is set on a mysterious Island in the South Pacific in the distant Near Future, where the eponymous protagonist has developed a steam-powered Machine that gives him control over all kinds of vibrations, including the force of Gravity. He forces a great Airship to land on his island, and explains all. [JC]
