A US biological Weapons programme gone awry is the background of this formulaic Monster Movie. Having transformed Indonesian flying foxes into intelligent omnivorous killing machines, a mad military scientist (Gunton) then lets them loose on a rural Texan community.
Bats is content to follow the beat of its genre, though it has enough unexpected moments to keep it from being entirely predictable. At times, the camerawork seems intentionally muddled to mask the silliness of the bat puppets, and the script is shaky, but the movie remains unpretentiously entertaining. [JN]
