Dorman, Sonya

(1924-2005) US author who sometimes signed herself as Sonya Dorman Hess or Sonya Hess, and who began publishing sf with The Putnam Tradition (January 1963 Amazing; 2008 ebook) establishing a reputation in the field for intensely written, sometimes highly metaphorical stories, the best known of which is "When I Was Miss Dow" (June 1966 Galaxy), which was given a retrospective James Tiptree Jr Award in 1995. She became inactive in the field after about 1980. Her fiction is surprisingly unlike her rather straightforward Poetry, for which she is generally best known; the first of her verse collections was Poems (coll 1970); for her short poem, "Corruption of Metals" (in 2076: The American Tricentennial, anth 1977, ed Edward Bryant), she won the Rhysling Award for 1978.
