(1844-1924) US psychologist and writer; his description of adolescence as involving a "Storm and Stress" period – characterized by conflicts with parents, mood disorders, and high-risk behaviour – was perhaps too obvious, as he was not credited with much insight on the subject until recently; he is of some sf interest for Recreations of a Psychologist (coll 1920), which contains "The Fall of Atlantis", where fictionalized speculations about Atlantis and Lemuria allow him to address Devolution, travel to Mars, and other topics.
