Yulsman, Jerry

Working name of US photographer and author Jerome Yulsman (1924-1999), who began his professional career in World War Two as a military photographer, winning the Distinguished Flying Cross; his later work appeared in magazines like Playboy and True Adventures, and he published several books about photography. As an author, he is of sf interest for the impressively suave, moody, sex-irradiated Alternate-History tale Elleander Morning (1984), the Jonbar Point of which – the assassination of Hitler as a young man in Vienna in 1913 by a young woman named Elleander Morning – generates a differing twentieth century, though the anomalous presence in this reality of a history of World War Two sets off a hyper-patriotic movement in Germany, necessitating a second assassination. H G Wells makes a Recursive appearance in the complex story, which is set partly just before World War One and partly in the transformed 1980s. Yulsman wrote other nonfantastic work under his own name and the pen-names Anonymous (three volumes of the erotic adventures of Dame Jenny Everleigh, although the other ten volumes are the work of Brian Levy), Allen Goodman and Jonathan Yates.
As a photographer, Jerry Yulsman should not be confused with the American photographer Jerry N Uelsmann (1934-2022). [JC/SH]
