(? -? ) US author of an sf novel, Arqtiq: A Study of Marvels at the North Pole (1899 chap), whose female protagonist flies to the North Pole in an Airship of her Invention; there she and her husband find and describe a surface Utopia known as Arq, and subsequently descend into a Hollow Earth after the fashion of John Cleves Symmes, discovering there that this inner world (and presumably our own above it) is in fact a vast Machine. The tale far precedes – but is not told in the manner of – Steampunk. [JC]
