Arctic Monkeys

Entry updated 27 January 2025. Tagged: Music.

UK indie rock band formed in Sheffield in 2002, led by singer-songwriter Alex Turner (1986-    ), who quickly achieved international success, partly through their then-innovative Internet-based marketing campaigns. Their sixth album, Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino (2018), follows several characters staying at a luxury hotel on the site of the 1969 Moon landing, and largely leaves behind their hard-edged guitar based style for a loungier, more electronic feel. Turner cites Rainer Werner Fassbinder, David Foster Wallace and social critic Neil Postman, among others, as lyrical influences, which is not the usual template for an sf concept album. [CWa]
