At the Earth's Core

Film (1976). Amicus, American International Pictures. Directed by Kevin Connor. Written by Milton Subotsky, based on At the Earth's Core (4-25 April 1914 All-Story Weekly; 1922) by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Cast includes Peter Cushing, Doug McClure and Caroline Munro. 89 minutes. Colour.
The success of Amicus's The Land that Time Forgot (also based on a Burroughs novel) inspired the making of this lightweight film, in which genially routine adventures take place inside a vast cavern visited by a hero and a scientist in a mechanical mole. There are Dinosaurs and ape-things. The wonders of Burroughs's fascinating, if illogical, Hollow-Earth world-within-a-world (Pellucidar) are barely hinted at. [JB/PN]
