Aural Exciters

US band put together by influential disco producer Bob Blank in New York, including members of Kid Creole and the Coconuts, The Contortions, and The David Letterman Band, plus teenage vocalist Taana Gardner, for the album Spooks in Space (1979). The title track begins with the lines "Mama said there'd be days like this / But she ain't said nothing about spooks in space!" The titular invaders come to Earth through lunar beams directed into television sets. At the lightweight pop end of the disco spectrum, this is more of a novelty than a classic, but is one of the more endearing oddities of the era. [CWa]
