Barrowcliffe, Mark
Entry updated 18 September 2023. Tagged: Author.
(1964- ) UK author who also writes as by Mark Alder and as by M D Lachlan. His early novels, beginning with Girlfriend 44 (2000) and all under his own name, are nonfantastic, though The Elfish Gene: Dungeons, Dragons and Growing up Strange (2007) is an amusing memoir, focusing on his adolescent obsession with the Role Playing Game Dungeons & Dragons.
Most of Barrowcliffe's pseudonymous work is fantasy: including the Wolfsangel sequence as by M D Lachlan, beginning with Wolfsangel (2010), set in early mediaeval Britain, with a strong focus on Werewolves; and the Banners of Blood sequence as by Mark Alder, beginning with Son of the Morning (2014), set at the time of the Hundred Years War, without werewolves. Of some sf interest is a thematic continuation of the Wolfsangel sequence, The Night Lies Bleeding (2018) as by M D Lachlan, which Equipoisally administers doses of Alternate History into a World War Two where Germany seems to be dominant, though the reawakening of an Immortal Werewolf casts this into doubt.
