Batman: The Brave and the Bold

Entry updated 10 November 2023. Tagged: TV.

Animated tv series (2008-2011). Warner Brothers Animation for the Cartoon Network. Produced by Michael Jelenic, James Tucker and Linda Steiner. Character created by Bob Kane. Directors included Ben Jones, Michael Goguen. Writers included Bernard Baily, Tidd Casey, Paul Dini, Dan Jurgens. Cast includes Diedrich Bader, John DiMaggio (occasional), Mark Hamill (occasional), Julie Newmar (occasional) and Adam West (occasional). 65 30-minute episodes. Colour.

Based on the long-running Batman team-up title The Brave and the Bold, this series featured Batman (Bader) teaming with various other DC Comics heroes, often lesser-known ones such as Adam Strange, Jonah Hex, and the modern Blue Beetle. Batman himself was the only regular character. Each episode began with a teaser starring Batman and another hero who would return in a future episode if viewer response was sufficiently positive; then the main, unrelated episode would run. This series was much lighter in tone than The Adventures of Batman and Robin (1992-1995), portraying the character more in the manner of Batman (1966-1968). Grimmer themes such as the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents and the death of the second Blue Beetle nevertheless appeared. Batman: The Brave and the Bold was less popular than its darker predecessors and ended after a truncated third season. [GSt]
