Pseudonym of US author and typographer Beatrice Lamberton Warde (1900-1969), in UK from 1925; famous for This Is a Printing Office (1932 broadsheet) under her own name, designed to promote the Perpetua typeface. Her sf novella, The Shelter in Bedlem (1937 chap; rev vt Peace Under Earth: Dialogues from the Year 1946 1938 chap), expresses a grim view of the Dystopia which would follow the end of the Future War she describes. The Crystal Goblet: Sixteen Essays on Typography (coll 1955) as Beatrice Warde conveys her passionate involvement in proper typography as a transparent window for words. [JC]
