(1941- ) US experimental physicist, author and fan, identical twin brother of Gregory Benford. The brothers were active in Fandom as Greg and Jim Benford from an early age, launching the Fanzine Void in May 1955; James dropped out after 13 issues and was replaced by Ted White for #14 in February 1958. James began to publish work of genre interest in professional venues with "Battleground" in If for May/June 1971, in collaboration with Gregory; three more such collaborations followed, the latest in 2024. James also published solo science-fact essays in Analog and elsewhere; like his brother but even more so, his main career has always been in science rather than sf. The anthology Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon (anth 2013) was co-edited by the two brothers; its theme, expounded through both fiction (including one reprint) and essays, was interstellar travel (see Starship).
