(1959-    ) US author, much of her work being romantic fantasy, who also writes as by Claire O'Dell. Typical of this output is the River of Souls sequence beginning with River of Souls (2010 ebook), which in a style evocative of the Planetary Romance carries its protagonist through various parts of the decaying Erythandran Empire, which serves as the fount for continuing adventures. The Alternate History Éireann sequence comprising Ars Memoriae (2009 chap) and The Time Roads (2014) features a Steampunk-flavoured nineteenth century Europe dominated by Éire; as some version of World War One threatens, the narrative moves into Time Opera territory. Of direct sf interest is the Near Future Janet Watson Chronicles, starting with A Study in Honor (2018), as by Claire O'Dell, set in an America shaken by extremism and the consequences of a second Civil War. The protagonists, Dr Janet Watson and Sara Holmes (see Sherlock Holmes; Women in SF), are involved in the rump government housed in Washington; Holmes solves cases with pleasing deftness. [JC]
