Binge, Nicholas

Entry updated 15 September 2025. Tagged: Author.

(?   -    ) Singapore-born author since resident in Switzerland, Hong Kong and the UK. His first novel, Professor Everywhere (2020), which is told in the form of a thesis by its protagonist, lightly academicizes her search for the titular professor, who after having generated a planetary catastrophe seems to manifest himself everywhere; he is perhaps best described as a kind of Secret Master playing a Godgame from the heart of something like a Labyrinth. In Binge's second novel, Ascension (2023), the sudden appearance of a 40,000 foot high mountain in the Pacific creates an Island it is necessary for an assortment of arms-bearing Scientists to investigate. It becomes clear that the mountain has in some sense manifested itself from another Dimension, or from the very deep past (see Time Abyss; Time Travel), or by other means. The ancient inhabitants of the site, Monsters seemingly derived from the work of H P Lovecraft, provide no clear explanation of the time-space enigma they represent; there is some sense here of the existential density of the inexplicable that evokes some of the work of Adam Roberts. His third novel, Dissolution (2025), intimately unpacks the relationship between an elderly woman and her husband, who seems to be suffering memory loss (see Amnesia) as a consequence of dementia; but may in fact be enduring a process of harvesting involving Memory Edits. She is offered the benefits of a new Technology capable of linking minds (see Identity Transfer; Telepathy), and perhaps allowing her redemptive access to his innovative work on the brain before the ongoing losses become intolerable.
