(1862-1939) Canadian lawyer and author whose Sleeper Awakes novel, After the Cataclysm: A Romance of the Age to Come (1909), is a Utopia flavoured by the work of William Morris; a young man who awakens into 1934 to find that the Great War which began in 1914, after Russia invaded a Zionist Palestine, had been almost instantly terminated by the passage of an Asteroid which – as in H G Wells's In the Days of the Comet (1906) – transforms the planet and its inhabitants. A mild-mannered socialist concord governs a world also bettered by the application of numerous beneficent Inventions. [JC]
