(1959-    ) US professional librarian and bibliographer, son of E F Bleiler, with whom he has collaborated on several works; his two solo works – The Index to Adventure Magazine (1990 2vols) and The Annotated Index to The Thrill Book: Complete Indexes to and Descriptions of Everything Published in Street and Smith's The Thrill Book (1991) – are invaluable explorations into rich sources of pulp literature that had hitherto been left only cursorily unexamined. Of more direct sf interest is his long collaboration in the writing and editing of his father's major works in the field (see E F Bleiler for comments on these works). Richard Bleiler assisted with the definitive Science Fiction: The Early Years: A Full Description of More Than 3,000 Science-Fiction Stories from Earliest Times to the Appearance of the Genre Magazines in 1930 with Author, Title, and Motif Indexes (Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press, dated 1990 but 1991), and was listed as giving assistance in the writing of Science-Fiction: The Gernsback Years: A Complete Coverage of the Genre Magazines Amazing, Astounding, Wonder, and Others from 1926 Through 1936 (1998). He is given sole editorial credit for the revised editions of E F Bleiler's two vast critical anthologies of the 1980s (see above entry for details), the recast editions being Science Fiction Writers: Second Edition: Critical Studies of the Major Authors from the Early Nineteenth Century to the Present Day (anth 1998) and Supernatural Fiction Writers; Contemporary Fantasy and Horror (anth 2003 2vols). The new versions maintain the high standards of the 1980s texts. Richard Bleiler has contributed several entries to this encyclopedia. [JC]
