Bracken, Alexandra

Entry updated 30 October 2026. Tagged: Author.

(1987-    ) US author who began to publish genre fiction with the Young Adult novel Brightly Woven (2010), which like much of her other work is Fantasy. Of sf interest is the YA series The Darkest Minds opening with The Darkest Minds (2012), in whose near-future Dystopia various young folk acquire Psi Powers and/or Superpowers as a side-effect of a Pandemic. The tyrannical state is strongly hostile to such wild talents; Paranoia is rife and no one can be entirely trusted. The book was filmed as The Darkest Minds (2018) directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson.

The Princess, the Scoundrel, and the Farm Boy (2015) retells the story of the film Star Wars (1977) for children. The Passenger sequence opening with Passenger (2016) is Time-Travel romance; the Prosper Redding tales opening with The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding (2017) are fantasy for younger readers; the YA Silver in the Bone series beginning with Silver in the Bone (2023) is again fantasy.
