(1931-2002) US fan based in Texas, active from 1953 to 1962; he was a co-founder in 1960 of the short-lived Southern Fandom Group and edited issues #7 to #14 of its newsletter The Southern Fan (14 issues July 1960-November 1962). He is best remembered for publishing the 40-page Who's Who in Science Fiction Fandom (1961 chap), a directory of contemporary Fandom based on responses to a widely circulated questionnaire; unfortunately many notable fans failed to reply and were omitted. According to Ted White (March 1966 L #17), the Who's Who was sufficiently well done that Broyles's announcement of an expanded version led to a considerably increased response; again unfortunately, the editor dropped out of fandom without publishing this second edition.
