Brynner, Rock

Entry updated 30 October 2023. Tagged: Author.

Working name of US musician, actor, academic and author Yul Brynner Junior (1946-2023), "Rock" being a childhood nickname in honour of the boxer Rocky Graziano; his relationship with his father Yul Brynner (1920-1985) was complex but fruitful, resulting in two studies of that actor. The son is of sf interest for The Doomsday Report (1998), a very Near-Future Satire on the Media Landscape, in the course of which a publisher discovers that an unsolicited manuscript titled The Doomsday Report has a Basilisk-like capacity to convince those who read it that Ecology degradation and Climate Change is about to devastate the planet, with the End of the World due in 2050. Once published, the tract creates planetary havoc. In 1998 Brynner's novel was subjected to negative reviews for its pessimism. [JC]
