(1944-    ) US editor and occasional author, active in Fandom from 1968, who while employed as a social worker in New York from the early 1970s carried out freelance work for sf publishers: she was consulting editor for the Star Trek Ties at Pocket Books and an outside reader for the US Science Fiction Book Club. In 1984 she became a full-time editor at the Putnam/Berkley-owned Ace Books, with subsequent promotions to Senior Editor (1987), Executive Editor (1994), and Senior Executive Editor and Marketing Director (1996), eventually retiring in 2014. Her work as acquisitions editor for many sf novels was recognized in 2013 by the Skylark Award and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Solstice Award (see SFWA Grand Master Award), in 2014 by the Hugo for best professional editor (long form) and in 2024 by a World Fantasy Award for life achievement.

Buchanan has published a small amount of genre fiction, beginning with "The End of Summer, by the Great Sea" for the Alternate History venue Alternate Kennedys (anth 1992) edited by Mike Resnick and, anonymously, Martin H Greenberg. Her one full-length novel is White Silence (1999), a Tie to the Highlander Shared-World franchise (see Highlander II: The Quickening). [DRL]
