The principal pseudonym of Edward Zane Carroll Judson (circa 1821-1886) [he lied variously about his age], US publisher, entrepreneur, and author primarily of dime novels (see Dime-Novel SF) – perhaps as many as 500 of them – under various names, though mainly as by Buntline, a pseudonym he used most notoriously for Westerns. He remains best known for his transformation of William F Cody (1846-1917) into Buffalo Bill, a process he began when Cody was a young man, with Buffalo Bill, the King of Border Men (December 1869-March 1870 Street & Smith's New York Weekly; 1881).
Though they are dime novels in both substance and style, Buntline tales of sf interest in fact precede the creation of the format in 1860; they include A Prize Tale: The Queen of the Sea; Or, Our Lady of the Ocean: A Tale of Love, Strife, and Chivalry (1848), a Lost Race adventure; and Morgan; Or, The Knight of the Black Flag: A Strange Story of By-Gone Times (1858) and Thayendanegea, the Scourge; Or, The War-Eagle of the Mohawks: A Tale of Mystery, Ruth, and Wrong (1859), both Gothics with fantasy elements. Judson's full output is unknown, and much that has been traced remains unexplored. [JC]
