(1932-2022) US visual effects artist/designer and author, whose initial training in architectural studies clearly emboldens the kinetic pizazz of his mature work; his first significant contribution to sf Cinema, working under Douglas Trumbull, was the introductory title sequence for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) directed by Stanley Kubrick. He remains most famous for his work on films in the Star Wars universe, in particular the first in the long series, Star Wars (1977) directed by George Lucas, being responsible for designing Luke Skywalker's Starfighter, the enemy's Death Star, and Princess Leia's Tantive IV. He later designed the remarkably convincing NORAD command centre for WarGames (1983) directed by John Badham.
Cantwell's own sf, the CoreFires sequence beginning with CoreFires (2018), is Space Opera set in a highly colourful galaxy with Homo sapiens's expansion from Mother Earth challenged by the mysterious CoreFires, which must be penetrated, and may contain at least one Forerunner species. There are Heroes and Villains. Hope dawns at the end. [JC]
