Carlson, Jeff

Entry updated 24 July 2023. Tagged: Author.

(1969-2017) US author who began to publish work of genre interest with "Exit" in MosCon XVI Program Book (anth 1994) edited anonymously. He is of sf interest for his first series, the Plague Year sequence beginning with Plague Year (2007), in which a melodramatically precise Nanotechnology-generated Pandemic kills all warm-blooded creatures below 10,000 feet. The survivors, typical of Homo sapiens, war with each other for the next two volumes. The Frozen Sky sequence, beginning with The Frozen Sky (short version L Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume XXIII (anth 2007) edited by Algis Budrys; 2012), follows events after humans make First Contact with the amphibious natives of Europa, the sixth moon of Jupiter. For the High Horizons sequence beginning with Castaways of New Mojave (2021), see his collaborator David Brin. The crises faced by Homo sapiens in Interrupt (2013), Carlson's sole singleton, are conveyed through various storylines, through with the doom of the Neanderthals is correlated with Near Future challenges after a solar storm creates a new ice age.
