(1904-1969) UK artist, editor, illustrator and author, active from the early 1920s, early work including a cover for Blackkerchief Dick (1923) by Margery Allingham; they were married from 1927 until her death, after which he completed her final (nonfantastic) novel in the Albert Campion detective series and wrote two more as Youngman Carter. The first of these, Mr Campion's Farthing (1969), based on an outline by Allingham, is of some genre interest: the hotly sought McGuffin of this quirky thriller is the secret of a Soviet-developed addictive Drug that compels Suicide; it ultimately emerges that an antidote has been developed, and the normal Cold War impasse is restored. As an author, Carter's short pieces were often published as by George Gulley.

Over his long career, Carter executed an estimated 2,000 covers for a wide range of titles, with some emphasis on crime novels, including many of his wife's, and several (all nonfantastic) by Georges Simenon; his style was competent, middle-of-the-road, with some liking for landscape effects in his later work, though early covers could be imaginatively typographic. His sf work tended to lack forthrightness; authors for whom he supplied covers include Geoffrey Dearmer, J Leslie Mitchell, C E Montague, J B Priestley, G H Saxon Mills and H G Wells. [JC/DRL]
