(1954- ) US lawyer and author, who also writes as by A L Shields; much of his work is nonfiction, arguing a moderate Christian take on political and cultural matters. Most of his novels are thrillers, though The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln (2012) is an Alternate History tale whose Jonbar Point – Lincoln survives an assassination attempt in 1865 – leads into a rancorous world where he is impeached for exceeding his authority during the Civil War, which is a hypothesis variously debated in the real world, and also mishandling Reconstruction. The protagonist, a young Black woman with a law degree, is part of the President's defense team. Under his pseudonym, Carter has begun a Christian series, starting with The Church Builder (2013) as by A L Shields, in which two Secret Master cadres have opposed each other over the ages: the Garden, who are good, defend civilization from the Wilderness, whose members plot (see Paranoia; Religion) to destroy faith. They are evil. [JC]
