(1981-    ) US author whose first novel, The Siren (2009; rev 2016), is fantasy [for Mermaids see The Encyclopedia of Fantasy below]. She is of sf interest for the Young Adult Dystopian Selection sequence beginning with The Selection (2012), set in a land called Illéa, which seems to be a confabulated version of a distant Near Future America, though Illéa is in fact a monarchy, with a population divided into ten rigidly controlled castes. Romance across caste lines governs the narrative as a whole; after some decades American society has become less stratified, though dangers remain. The Betrothed sequence beginning with The Betrothed (2020) is romance fantasy. [JC]
