(? - ) US editor and critic who began to publish reviews of genre interest in The New York Review of Science Fiction for April 1989; he also contributed a poem, "Mimsy Were the Ginsberg", to Star*Line for March/April 1989. His first book-length work as editor was the Readercon-associated Original Anthology Monochrome: The Readercon Anthology (anth 1990), released under the auspices of his small press Broken Mirrors Press; contributors included Samuel R Delany (with an essay), Thomas M Disch (poems), Esther M Friesner, Martha Soukup and Gene Wolfe. Cholfin is perhaps best known for editing the eight issues of the highly regarded Crank! (which see) from 1993 to 1998. This was again released through Broken Mirrors Press, which has also published worthy though uncommercial projects by writers such as David R Bunch and R A Lafferty. In 1995 Cholfin received a World Fantasy Award in the special non-professional category for both Broken Mirrors and Crank!. The reprint selection The Best of Crank! (anth 1998) was published not by a small press but by Tor Books. [DRL]
