US Cinema perfect-bound 8 x 9 in magazine printed on slick paper in similar format to a trade paperback. Published by Don Shay/Cinefex LLC. Editors John Duncan, others. 172 issues 1980-2021. Quarterly.
Cinefex grew largely out of publisher Shay's love for the films and visual effects work of Willis H O'Brien, and over the years it remained a cornerstone magazine for those interested in state-of-the-art cinematic effects. It published interviews with such notables as Rick Baker (1950- ), George Lucas and Michael Westmore (1938- ), together with virtually every major figure involved in designing special effects for Cinema. Genres other than sf were covered; some selections of sf interest are Cocoon (1985), Jurassic Park (1993) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). The magazine was available as both a print edition and a Webzine. Shay retired as publisher in 2014 and passed control to his son Gregg Shay, who in #172 (February 2021) announced that this would be the final issue owing to the effects of the Covid pandemic.
