Coheed and Cambria

Entry updated 29 July 2024. Tagged: Comics, Music.

US rock band formed in Nyack, New York in 2005. Almost all their albums form part of an overarching narrative, known as The Amory Wars, which also takes in Comic books and tie-in novels written by the band's vocalist and guitarist Claudio Sanchez (1978-    ). The setting is a galaxy known as Heaven's Fence, in which Stars and planets are held in place by energy beams ("the Keywork"). The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2002) and Year of the Black Rainbow (2010) focus on the efforts of the heroes Coheed and Cambria to thwart the dictatorial Tri-Mage. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (2005), Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005) and Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow (2007) follow their son, Claudio Kilgannon, who is foretold to be a saviour. The Aftermath: Ascension (2012) and The Aftermath: Descension (2013) are prequels. Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures (2018) and Vaxis – Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind (2022) continue the original story. The albums contain a good deal of melodic punk in the vein of Green Day, becoming more and more grandiose, with considerable emphasis on technical virtuosity, as the series goes on.

Sanchez filled in gaps in the story with the comic The Amory Wars, published by Evil Ink. Individual volumes are: The Bag.On.Line.Adventures: The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2 issues, 2004), illustrated by Wes Abbott; Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005), illustrated by Christopher Shy; The Amory Wars: The Second Stage Turbine Blade, Vol. 1 (5 issues, 2007), illustrated by Gus Vasquez (issues 1-2) and Mike S Miller (issues 3-5); The Amory Wars: The Second Stage Turbine Blade, Vol. 2 (5 issues, 2008), illustrated by Gabriel Guzman; The Amory Wars: In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (12 issues, 2010), illustrated by Chris Burnham (issues 1-7) and Aaron Kuder (issues 7-12); Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, co-written by Chondra Echert (12 issues, 2017), illustrated by Rags Morales; Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures, with Echert (2018), illustrated by Chase Stone. In addition, "deluxe" limited editions of Year of the Black Rainbow and Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly were issued with tie-in adaptations written by Sanchez and Peter David. [CWa]
