Corea, Chick

Entry updated 13 September 2021. Tagged: Music, People.

(1941-2021) US jazz composer and performer of largely instrumental music. Corea's career began in the 1960s with a number of fluent Latin-jazz releases. In the 1970s the influence of L Ron Hubbard (Corea converted to Scientology sometime around the start of this decade) began to make itself apparent in his music. The band Return to Forever, a side-project of Corea's, released half a dozen Scientologically-influenced albums, amongst them Return to Forever (1972) and Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (1973), both lucid and often beautifully estranging pieces of music. Corea's album To The Stars (2004) is an instrumental adaptation of Hubbard's Return to Tomorrow (1954), and the album The Ultimate Adventure (2006) is based on the Arabian Nights via Hubbard's Slaves of Sleep (1948) and other early published examples of Hubbardian orientalism. Corea also contributed to the 1984 Battlefield Earth soundtrack album – not the official soundtrack release attendant on the justly maligned Roger Christian movie Battlefield Earth (2000), but an earlier, Hubbard-authorized album of music inspired by the novel.
