(1867-1921) UK-born soldier and author, in South Africa 1902-1920; some of the stories assembled in A Rip Van Winkle of the Kalahari and Other Tales of South-West Africa (coll 1915) are of sf interest, including in particular the title novella, which concerns a Lost Race of ancient Phoenicians under the thrall of an Immortal She figure, and "The Proof", in which a young man attempts to prove the theory of Evolution by living with a tribe of baboons, but suffers Devolution (see Apes as Human). Cornell was awarded an OBE for military service during World War One. [JC]
