Critical Wave

Entry updated 19 February 2024. Tagged: Fan, Publication.

UK Semiprozine (1987-1996; 2008-current) edited by Steve Green and Martin Tudor. 46 A4 issues, 1987-1996. During its first series Critical Wave was a bimonthly sf and fantasy newsletter or Newszine – though its schedule often slipped by a month – carrying reviews plus news items covering fantasy, horror and comics as well as sf. It also featured Interviews and articles. Launched in October 1987 as a mimeographed Fanzine, Critical Wave became professionally litho-printed with #9 in 1989 and was later said to have a circulation above 1000. The editors clearly wanted it to become the UK equivalent of Locus but never quite attained the same high profile in the sf world. The newsletter ceased publication, chiefly for financial reasons, with #46 dated July 1996. A second series – focusing on Convention reports and other matters of Fandom largely uncovered by existing UK news sources – was launched as a solely on-line publication in November 2008, beginning with #2.01; that was the only issue to appear.
