His poetry – assembled in volumes like What Rough Book: Dark Poems and Light (coll 1992 chap; vt Dyscrasias: Selected Poems 1995 chap), Satan Is a Mathematician: Poems of the Weird, Surreal, and Fantastic (coll 1998 chap) and Shimmarie and Other Poems (coll 2000 chap) – is conservative, technically sophisticated, often comical; the range of topics runs a gamut from metaphorical conceits to literal sf.
