Diaz, Hernan

(1973- ) Argentine-born author, mostly in US from early adulthood; active from 2000, he writes in English. His first two novels – In the Distance (2017), a surreal Western featuring an eastward trek across nineteenth-century America, and Trust (2022), a metafictional scrutiny of high life in New York – are not literally fantastic; the latter won a Pulitzer Prize. Diaz is of sf interest for this third novel, Ply (2026), set in a disintegrated, balkanized, stateless but Dystopian, severely depopulated New York in the distant Near Future, where Homo sapiens, found measurable by AI in dismissive terms on the behalf of predator corporations, eke out subordinate roles. A mysterious figure – a reality-altering Inventor or Secret Master or both – lends Genre SF sprightliness to the tale.
Diaz should not be confused with the footballer Hernán Diaz (1965- ). [JC]
