Dobozy, Tamas

(1969- ) Canadian academic and author, active in the latter capacity from the mid 1990s; his work, mostly short stories, ranges through the jostling venn-diagram intersections of genres typical of modern Fantastika, beginning with his first collection, When X Equals MaryLou (coll 1995), and proceeding consistently, without any radical evolution, to Ghost Geographies: Fictions (coll 2021). Siege 13: Stories (coll 2012), however, though not technically distinct from his other work, comprises a scarifying portrait of Budapest, under siege at the end of World War Two, as a surreal Zone, images of which haunt Hungarian survivors and descendants over the decades in Canada. Influences, overt and slantwise, include authors like Roberto Bolaño and Guy Davenport.
Dobozy's only novel, the uneasily gonzo Doggone (1998), follows its protagonist's search for a way to kill his sick dog through a picaresque plot that edges towards Timeslip outcomes. [JC]
