(1958- ) US artist who has been professionally active since 1979, first working in Comics, gaining wider attention with a 1983 cover for Heavy Metal magazine, and branching out into Role Playing Games from 1985; sometimes credited as David Dorman. He has subsequently created sf, fantasy and horror images for many book covers and interiors, and also Collectible Card Games, working in oils in a distinctive photo-realistic style. Dorman has become particularly associated with the Star Wars franchise, painting covers for many novelizations and other Ties, including the lengthy Star Wars: Young Jedi Knights (1995-1999) novel sequence by Kevin J Anderson and Rebecca Moesta. Some of this franchise work is showcased in Star Wars: The Art of Dave Dorman (graph 1996); George Lucas is a known fan who has acquired many original paintings in this vein. A later and very substantial retrospective collection is Rolling Thunder: The Art of Dave Dorman (graph 2010). The artist expanded his range into entirely digital artwork in 2009. [DRL]
