Drink Tank, The

Entry updated 9 September 2024. Tagged: Fan, Publication.

US Fanzine edited by Chris Garcia (some issues co-edited by James Bacon), published from California, 2005-current; electronic format.

From relatively humble beginnings as an outlet for Garcia's own writing, The Drink Tank has become (in part due to its remorseless frequency) a notable fanzine of the twenty-first century; it won the fanzine Hugo in 2011 after being nominated in every year from 2007 to 2010. While still featuring Garcia's own writing, it also publishes reviews of books, films, and other fanzines; Garcia's column "52 Weeks To Science Fiction Film Literacy" deals with one essential movie of the sf genre per issue. Convention reports and social news of Fandom also appear often. Apart from Garcia himself, the most prolific contributor was probably Taral Wayne. Whilst its frequency combines with its essentially amateur nature to produce a sometimes sloppy effect, The Drink Tank always gives the impression of having a finger in most of science fiction's pies. The extra-large 300th issue, published in November 2011, was intended to have 300 contributors but in fact had more. [SHB]
