(1957- ) French mathematician, aeronautical engineer and author, active from the early 1980s, his short stories being published in several volumes, beginning with Autoportrait ["Self-Portrait"] (coll 1986). Two volumes of translated tales have appeared. The Night Orchid: Conan Doyle in Toulouse (coll trans various 2004) may be initially most remarkable for its range, from Hard SF to Fabulations, but a lucid intensity of rendering marks most of his work, including "Déchiffrer la Trame" (1997 Galaxie; trans Sheryl Curtis as "Unravelling the Thread" July 1998 Interzone), assembled as the title story of Déchiffrer la Trame (coll 2001). Authors with whom he has been compared include J G Ballard, Stanisław Lem and Zoran Živković.
Of his novels, the first is Le Jeu des Sabliers ["The Game of the Hourglass"] (omni 2003) which, though technically two books assembled together, does in fact comprise one novel separated – due to the Présence du Futur series' rigid word-length limit – into two volumes: Le Temple de Chair ["The Temple of Flesh"] (1987), and Le Temple d'Os ["The Temple of Bone"] (1988). None of his full-length books have been translated into English. [JC]
